Summary:

Typical duties include but are not limited to:
  • Setting up garnishment vendors in the payroll system as orders are received;
  • Setting deductions on the employee master file within the payroll system of record;
  • Processing court ordered wage garnishments of the following types: Child Support, Student Loans, Wage Assignments, Bankruptcy Orders, State and Federal Tax Levies;
  • Ensuring all garnishment payments are accurate and timely submitted to the garnishing agency;
  • Ensuring all garnishment correspondence is answered, orders are modified as appropriate and released appropriately;
  • Initiating checks for payment to courts and other agencies;
  • Ensuring the integrity of the database in the Payroll system and any hard copy files;
  • Researching and responding to inquiries from employees, courts, state and federal agencies and others regarding garnishment orders.
Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications

  • Graduation from an accredited college or university with an associate or undergraduate degree with emphasis on bookkeeping or accounting or combination of college and/or equivalent work experience. 
  • Experience within a payroll department.
  • Knowledge of governmental accounting, generally accepted accounting principles and generally accepted auditing
    standards.
  • Ability to perform detailed garnishment analysis and determine the appropriate payroll setup regarding timing,
    payment amounts and other legal requirements.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of garnishment and wage assignment regulations and knowledge of federal and state
    regulations, specifically related to garnishments and wage assignments.
  • Ability to communicate clearly, both orally and in writing with employees of various levels within the University and
    with federal, state and third party agencies.
  • Ability to use office automation software, word processing, spreadsheets etc.
  • Ability to provide quality customer service in a professional manner.
  • Ability to work independently and as a team player.
  • Demonstrated experience working in and fostering an environment of respect, professionalism and civility with a population of faculty, staff, and students from various backgrounds and experiences, or a commitment to do so as a staff member at VCU.
